The city of Dresden, also known as the „Elb-Florence of the North” has a rich architectural, artistic and cultural history. The “Bühlsche Terrassen”, the “balcony Europe`s” (Goethe) offers its visitors a wonderful view of the river Elbe and the historical panorama of Dresden.
The “Church of Our Lady” (Frauenkirche) is landmark of the city and even after its reconstruction in 2005, it remains a memorial of the Second World War and a symbol of the city. Cultural symbols of the city are located near the banks of the river Elbe: the Semper Opera, built by Gottfried Semper in the style of the Italian High Renaissance and the Zwinger, one of the most impressive European Baroque masterpieces. The Semper Opera and the Zwinger form an architectural unit together with the Italian Village (Italienisches Dörfchen), the Old Town Guardhouse, the baroque Cathedral and the baroque Theater Square. The neighboring Dresden Royal Palace (Residenzschloss), the former center of power of the Saxon electors and kings, now houses and exhibits the Historical Green Vault (Das Grüne Gewölbe), Europe´s most extensive Treasure Chamber Museum.
